Pope Francis has today appointed Archbishop Arthur Roche as the Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. Archbishop Roche has worked in the Congregation as Secretary (the number two official) since his appointment by Benedict XVI in 2012.
Along with Archbishop Roche, the Pope announced a revised leadership team of trained liturgists at the Congregation, which is tasked with furthering the implementation of the renewal of the liturgy as set out the 1962-65 Second Vatican Council.
The new Secretary is Bishop Vittorio Viola, a Franciscan friar and liturgy specialist who has taught liturgy at the Pontifical Liturgical Institute of Sant’Anselmo in Rome. Mgr Aurelio García Macías, a Spanish priest-official at the department, becomes Under-Secretary. Mgr Garcia has a doctorate in liturgy from Sant’Anselmo.
Congratulations to Archbishop Roche!
